Peru Online Winter Farmers Market:  online ordering now open

Good evening following a couple of gorgeous days (at least in the hoophouse). This may be the last week for spinach. So, stock up on spinach, and freeze some. Spinach does not like lengthening days, so I am not going to fight it with spring spinach seedlings. I do have asian greens slowly growing, maybe (or maybe not yet) for next time.

North Country Creamery’s cows are no longer “on vacation”, so they have plenty of dairy products.

Irina has a great variety of high quality snacks.

Enjoy. We will be open for orders through Tuesday evening.

Berea Gardens:  Fro Wednesday, 4/13

Hi Friends,

Temperatures last night gave us quite a worry, but the field grown cauliflower, cabbage and broccoli survived the 20* night with a little help from a frost-cloth covering and a lot of prayer. Still, without much decent growing weather, things are proceeding slowly. The kale and lettuce are in our high-tunnels and are doing very well.

Our grain mill decided to spontaneously disassemble itself a few days ago and I will be waiting for parts until after Wedneday’s market, so I regret that we cannot offer the Multi-grain Bread this week.

Thanks to all of you that ordered last week! We had a nice start to the season.

Blessings,
Bob

Recipes

*Mushroom Lettuce Wraps *
makes 12 boats or serves 4

2 large garlic cloves – skinned and crushed (use a microplane grater)
2 teaspoons finely grated fresh ginger root (use a microplane grater)
1/4 teaspoon sea salt
1/8 teaspoon ground cayenne
2 tablespoonsTamari soy sauce
1 tablespoon toasted sesame oil
3 tablespoons peanut or grapeseed oil
1 lb fresh mushrooms – stems removed and discarded, caps cut in 1/4? cubes
4 scallions – root ends trimmed, top trimmed 3? from edge and very finely sliced (3/4 cup)
3 tablespoons roasted peanuts – coarsely chopped (use a mini food processor)
1 tablespoon lime juice
12 medium large lettuce leaves (4? long) – rinsed and spin-dried

Place the garlic, ginger, salt, cayenne, Tamari and sesame oil in a small bowl. Whisk until well blended and set aside.
Heat a large non-stick frying pan over high heat. Add the peanut or grapeseed oil and mushrooms. Sauté for 7 to 8 minutes until the mushrooms are golden-brown, tossing only from time to time. Reduce heat to medium. Drizzle with the ginger-soy mixture. Quickly toss and sauté for only 15 seconds. Transfer mushrooms to a large bowl and cool until slightly warm to the touch.
When ready to serve, add the scallions and peanuts to the mushrooms. Drizzle with the lime juice and stir until well blended. Spoon about 2 tablespoons’ worth of the mushroom mixture into each lettuce leaf. Arrange the boats on a platter and Serve immediately.

Market News

Hello!

We hope you are all able to enjoy this beautiful spring we are having! There have been a few freeze scares over the weekend, but thankfully all the crops pulled through with no damage. The strawberries are flowering and setting fruit, and those were our biggest concern. However, never fear! All is well!

We will be continuing our every other week delivery schedule through April, until the first strawberries appear. Please keep this in mind as you order, and stock up on eggs, frozen items, and good greens!

We have a lot of lettuce this week, so think delicious salads for lunch and dinner!

The Bloomy Rind Cheese shop has a great selection of items this week! The sheep’s milk butter is a great treat to try on some Dozen Bakery fresh baked bread, along with some yummy radishes and a sprinkling of salt!~

We look forward to seeing you on Wednesday! Thank you so much for all your support!

Athens Locally Grown:  ALG Market Open for April 14

Market News

The average last frost date for Athens falls this week, but you never know when a weird cold front will blow through, wreaking havoc on the little plants. It may be that last night was the last blast of cold for the year, but ten days from now we might have to crank up the heaters again. If you’ve put out summer plants like tomatoes, peppers, squash, and eggplants, keep an eye out on the forecast for the next week or two, just in case you need protect them. The average last frost date for some of our growers won’t come for another month, further up in the mountains, but that just means more variety for our market.

It’s really never too late to put something in the ground, and it’s prime planting season now. I was one of the founding farms of Athens Locally Grown, back in 2002, but these days I’m living back in the city of Athens and lucky enough to have a community garden right outside my font door. Springtime weather makes me want to throw seeds in every bit of dirt I can find, wherever I find it, so maybe this week I’ll also make some native wildflower seed bombs for use in bare patches I run across.

If you’ve been preparing your garden, or just thinking about starting one, be sure to check out all of the live plants offered by our growers through Athens Locally Grown and the other area farmers markets. Sure, you could run off to Home Depot and buy some mass-produced seedlings soaked in synthetic fertilizers and sprayed with fumigants, but you can also get hardy seedlings grown by the same people cultivating plants for their own vegetable beds, free of synthetic chemicals, for the same prices.

Why am I encouraging you to grow your own food when I’m in the business of helping growers sell you food they grow? For one, studies have shown (and my own experience confirms) that people who grow their own gardens tend to actually increase their yearly purchases at their local farmers markets. Once they take an interest their food so strong that they begin growing what they can, they find that they can rely even more on their local growers for things that they used to get at the grocery store. And besides, my goal is for every community to become less reliant on food grown elsewhere and shipped in from long distances. And you having your own little patch of garden in your yard is a big step in helping Athens do just that.

Thank you so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you on Thursday at Ben’s Bikes at the corner of Pope and Broad Streets from 4:30 to 8pm!

Other Area Farmers Markets

The Athens Farmers Market opens this coming Saturday. You can find more information on their website. The Comer Farmers’ Market is open for the season on Saturday mornings from 9am to noon. Check www.facebook.com/comerfm for more information. The Oconee County Farms Market is open on Saturdays in Watkinsville. Their website is www.oconeefarmersmarket.org The other area markets are also all closed for the season, I believe. If you know of any markets operating, please let me know.

All of these other markets are separate from ALG (including the Athens Farmers Market) but many growers sell at multiple markets. Please support your local farmers and food producers, where ever you’re able to do so!

We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!
