Tullahoma Locally Grown:  April 11 - Let's Talk Turkey

Good morning.

It is early April and time to start thinking about where you will get your Thanksgiving Turkey this year. For the past couple of years, several of you have enjoyed the fresh, never frozen turkeys from Fountain Springs Farm. This year, they are offering 45 turkeys. Because there is a finite number of turkeys available, a $20 deposit is required. You will find “Turkey Deposit” listed in the Meat/Turkey category. The early planner gets the turkey and a receipt for the deposit!

The weights will be between 14-22 lbs. When you place your order, indicate your desired weight. In November, you will receive a turkey close to the weight you requested and pay the balance based on $3.75 per pound. This is a whole turkey with gibblets. Do not worry, we will send reminders closer to November so you do not buy a frozen turkey.

YOUR MARKET IS CURRENTLY OPEN.
Now is a great time to order meat for your weekend cookouts and other items you need for the week. You can order bread, eggs, milk, vegetables, herbs, meat, freshly roasted coffee, and more. Consider a made-to-order loaf of English Breakfast Toasting Bread or a half-dozen Jumbo Pretzel Rolls. Both of these breads are made from scratch on market day.

Your local market closes at noon on Wednesday Order now before your favorite items run out.

South Cumberland Farmer's Market:  Tuesday Markets...

For future markets:

It has come to our attention that when live plants (anything containing soil) are brought to market, some are allowed to be on the tables, while others are put under the tables. There are reasons for this; but nonetheless, so that everyone is treated exactly the same, ALL live plants will go on the floor because we do not have table space to accommodate all plants. We realize that this may be problematic for those smaller containers (e.g., 6-packs) that were previously put on the tables so they didn’t get accidentally kicked/knocked over or overlooked, so please consider bringing some sort of container that will raise them up off the floor. You may use an upside-down box or cooler or anything that accommodates your plants, but make sure it is clearly labeled with your farm name. If it is not, it may not be there the next time you want to use it at market.

All meat and eggs must also go under the tables in appropriately sized coolers. Meat and other items may NOT go in the same coolers; you may need two coolers if you have two different types of sales.

Also, if you are a grower who uses coolers, make sure they are clearly marked with your farm name on the exterior of the cooler. And make sure that they are cleaned. Just look and sniff – some look dirty but smell OK; others look OK, but smell “not quite right.” You all know what that is like!

As we come into having more and more produce, please make sure your produce is clean. If it has to be washed, make sure it is DRY. If there are any puddles/drips of water coming from your bags or produce, we will notify you.

If you have both on-table and off-table orders, you may consider making additional signage so your spots can be labeled for easier access when the volunteers fulfill orders. We always encourage you to make your own signs; color and creativity count when it comes to attracting attention of customers as they come through the line (for those who do).

As always, properly label your orders. You do not have to print out your labels (although that is so easy through the software on the My Account page), but be sure all the pertinent information is clearly on your label.

We will have a larger market this week – the first large market of the spring season. Be sure you are totally checked in NO LATER THAN 4:15 — not only for the market tomorrow, but for all markets until further notice. If you have an emergency, know that you will not be able to reach us after 11:00 a.m. on Tuesdays. If you call, e-mail, or text we probably/possibly not receive your communication until after market — may not be till 7:00 p.m. If you are not checked in and your customers arrive for their products, it will just be marked as missing and subtracted from your next check.
Last week some Growers did not receive their Harvest E-Mail (Sales Notification). If you did not receive that e-mail, contact us using this address: cumberlandfm@gmail.com .

Princeton Farm Fresh:  The Market is Open

Spring and all of its crazy weather is here. I am just dying to get plants in the ground outside, but hesitate to when one week it is in the 30s and the next in the 60s, I guess this is why I like growing in high tunnels so much. It allows me to plant earlier and have more available all year long.
Don’t forget that our Traditional Farmers Market Meeting is this evening at 7pm at the Caldwell County Extension Office. We would love to see you come out if you have produce, arts and crafts, or another producer in our area who would like to have more info about this market.
Hope to see you this evening,
Angela

Cook Farm:  Cook Farm

Hi All from the farm.
We are very thankful to receive the rain just at the right time-and a perfect rain to settle in the new seeds of spinach in the shade garden. Larry also planted clover as a cover/green manure in the area we plan to plant corn, squash and melons.
I hope those of you who ordered last week are happy with your purchase. I desire to provide for you just what I would expect. If you are ever not happy please let me know!
It is slim picking in my experimental winter garden for spinach and kale. If I knew back in October of 2015 that it would do so well I would have planted more.:) Remember Tuesday at 8 p.m. is the deadline to get your order in. Thanks again for supporting our efforts
Susan Cook

Conyers Locally Grown:  Available for Friday April 15

Thank you for all your support,
Brady
