Princeton Farm Fresh:  The Market is Open

We have been enjoying the Okra this month. Ours is really coming in hot and heavy. It is amazing to me how tall these plants get. I go from bending over to harvest them to needing one the boys to go pick because they are over my head these days. I thought I would include the recipe for Lady and Son’s Okra today. It is a comfort food in our home, and I hope it will become in yours too.
Ingredients
4 slices bacon, diced into small pieces
1 small onion, peeled and chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 (15-ounce) cans diced tomatoes
1 tablespoon chicken base
1 tablespoon sugar
2 cups fresh okra, cut into 1-inch pieces (may use frozen, if fresh not available)
Fresh ground black pepper
Directions
Cook bacon slightly. Saute onion and garlic with bacon until tender. Add tomatoes, chicken base, sugar and pepper. Stir well and let simmer for about 20 minutes. Adjust seasoning if needed. Meanwhile wash okra and remove fuzz if using fresh and cut into pieces. Add the okra and simmer until okra is done, about 20 more minutes (less if using frozen okra.)

Recipe courtesy of Paula Deen
I look forward to seeing everyone on Friday,
Angela

Heirloom Living Market Lilburn:  Tidbits and Reminder to Order!

Market Closes Monday at 8:00pm!

Thank you to those who have already placed orders!

Tidbits and News

Dabrielle and Bruce of My Daily Bread have no items listed on the Market this week. Bruce is having surgery on Wednesday (I mistakenly reported it was Thursday). Please keep him in your prayers as well as Dabrielle, their son Brandon and the Doctor and staff who will be performing his surgery. We wish you well, Bruce!

I am sorry to report that Marie of Bakery on Brooks will no longer be baking for the Market. This is most unfortunate for all of us. Please keep her in your prayers for the healing of her ulcers.

The end of Summer is fast approaching and we can see this in the decrease in the availability of Summer Produce! Greg Hutchins of Heritage Farm has helped us out by adding some produce that he has available! The Cherokee Purple, German Johnson and Yellow Giants are all Heirloom Tomato Varieties and delicious. When Greg was delivering last week and he opened the ‘tomato cooler’, the wonderful aroma took me back to the garden! What a wonderful smell and the Tomatoes are delicious! Be sure and check out all of the Veggies our Local Farmers have listed this week! Lots of Eggplants, Peppers, Cucumbers, Collards, Kale, Okra!

I admit to an addiction to ga sourdough CRACKERS! Tracy has really nailed the crunch, the taste and just the right amount of salt! Although I am Gluten Free, I find that I can eat these little snacks (in moderation) and not have any issues!

Jay Parsons of Dances with Bees is offering a Beekeeping 101 Class! Jay is extremely knowledgeable about Bees and all things related to Bees. This class is an excellent opportunity to explore what Beekeeping is all about and decide if it is something you have an interest in pursuing additional classes.

Shalley and David Carrell of Carrell Farmswill be back next week. They are on vacation – which is a rare treat for them!

I have spoken with Tammy Burnell of Burnell Farms and they plan to rejoin the Market at the beginning of October. Currently they are involved in Open Air Farmers’ Markets and are working on opening their own small Market near their Farm!

Morris Cleveland of Healing Earth Farm will be back with us as soon as he has items ready to harvest. I will let you know as soon as he returns.

I spoke with Vicky Fry of Fry Farm on Friday. Although Vicky does have other items growing, her listed items only reflect a few. This is because Vicky and Steve do not want to disappoint anyone if items ordered are not ready for harvest on Market Day. I have suggested to Vicky that she let me know on Wednesday what additional items will be harvested prior to Market on Thursday. In my ‘Market Day reminder email’ on Thursday morning, I will let you know what will be available from Fry Farm at Market. This is a heads up, so you can budget for extras!

Please note that Rusty of Little Tots Estate has now listed eggs on the Market! He has Copper Maran Hens which produce dark brown eggs. He also has chickens that produce blue eggs and green eggs as well. His hens live in the pasture and receive Organic Feed as a supplement.

…on a more personal note…

The Black Lab is currently enjoying a vacation in Ohio with my brother, his wife and their Brittney Spaniel, Doyle. It was a difficult and painful decision to make; however, it is temporary and I know how well loved and cared for he will be until I am in a position to bring him home.

I humbly ask for your prayers for me. At present I am faced with challenges that seem to be overwhelming; however, I am confident that with God’s blessings and grace all will be well. Please pray that God will guide me on His path and give me wisdom, discernment, peace of mind and financial stability. Please know that I appreciate your prayers on my behalf.

Be sure and get your order in and thank you for supporting our LOCAL Farmers!

Market News

We’ve reached that part of the season I warned about a few weeks ago, where the heat and humidity have taken their toll on the plants and they just stop producing for a while. The end of August is a pretty miserable time to be a veggie grower. All of the weeds seem to soak of the heat and grow faster than you can pull them (especially the grasses), and nothing you want to produce fruit will. On top of that, if you want to have a lush fall garden, you have to be starting seeds and getting transplants ready to get put out in the garden. They, however, tend to want cold, wet weather (most of what we plant in the fall are actually spring veggies, and they come to life expecting the end of winter, not full-on summer), and it takes a lot of trickery to get them established before they realize what’s really going on. It’s a lot of hot, sweaty work, and I know quite a few growers who just pack it all in during August and take their yearly break then. Northern growers might take the winters off, but down here, it makes a lot of sense to take the summer off instead.

Slowdown or not, there are still many, many items available from our growers this week. Quite often, the summer plants revive themselves in September and through October until the frosts arrive, so we don’t have to say goodbye to them quite yet. And soon the fall produce will arrive! We’re already seeing a preview of that from growers a bit north of Athens with cooler micro-climates, such as the asparagus from Green Acres.

Thanks so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you on Thursday at Ben’s Bikes at the corner of Pope and Broad Streets from 4:30 to 8pm!

Other Area Farmers Markets

The Athens Farmers Market is open on Saturdays at Bishop Park and Wednesday afternoons downtown at Creature Comforts. You can catch the news on their website. The West Broad Farmers Market from the Athens Land Trust is open Saturday mornings and their farm stand is open Tuesday afternoons. They have a website too. A new Athens Sunday market has opened up at the Classic Center, every Sunday from 11 to 4 now through October. They have a website here: http://www.sundaycentermarket.com. The Comer Farmers Market is open in downtown Comer on Saturday mornings. The Oconee County farmers market is open Saturday mornings in front of the Oconee County Courthouse in Watkinsville. The Shields Ethridge Cultivator Market is held monthly in Jefferson. If you know of any markets operating, please let me know.

All of these other markets are separate from ALG (including the Athens Farmers Market) but many growers sell at multiple markets. Please support your local farmers and food producers, where ever you’re able to do so!

We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!
