Siloam Springs, AR:  Weblog Entry

Just a reminder that the outdoor market will be setting up at the Homegrown Festival, Saturday, October 3rd! We originally planned to set up on Broadway Street but were offered the space in the Hoffman parking lot where the mural is and we jumped on the chance to be in the heart of the festival!

We will be opening at 8 a.m. like always and the festival will be opening at 10 a.m. The festival vendors will be setting up between 8-10 so the area might look a bit crazy but don’t let that stop you from coming to shop at the market-our farmers and vendors value your business and we hope being located at the festival makes this a great day for all our customers and also introduces others in our community to the farmers market for the first time.

Market News

Ancient Awakenings is selling online this week.

EGGS Unfortunately, we only have a small amount of eggs available this week. The most popular item at the market and yet so hard to keep the chickens laying a steady schedule. We are aware of your frustration trying to purchase these precious eggs. Since our supply is so limited, we would like to request that you only order 1 doz per family this week. I will be working on contacting more farmers to see if we can increase our supply but in the mean time…thank you so much for your patience.

Your Account

FREE MEMBERSHIP You can now waive your membership fee of $25 just by signing up to volunteer one full Saturday morning, 8:30am-12:30pm. It’s fun and rewarding to experience “behind the scenes” of our locally grown market. Volunteers greet farmers and customers, organize food delivery and pick up, and check-out customer orders using a ipad. Check out this online sign up sheet to find an opening. http://www.signupgenius.com/go/4090d4baca92fa13-thecumming

UPDATE CONTACT With all the hustle and bustle of back-to-school and new routines, it’s easy to forget things like picking up your TCH order. Remember that we can’t keep your items past 12pm, and we’ll try contacting you any way we know how to make sure you get what you ordered. Now’s a great time to check the phone number on your account to make sure it’s a number I can reach you at 11:45am on a Saturday. I start calling everyone who hasn’t picked up yet then, and will keep trying to reach you until 12pm, when we have to pack it all up. I hate seeing people’s food go somewhere else, and having a good phone number on your account is the best way to keep that from happening.

DELIVERY We are postponing Vickery pick up and delivery in September.

Main Market Location and Pick Up
Building 106, Colony Park Dr. in the Basement of Suite 100, Cumming, GA 30040. Pick up every Saturday between 10-12pm.

Joyful Noise Acres Farm:  Change is in the air.

Dear friends,
I was able to speak to many of you in person yesterday but wanted to share with all of you that we will be closing the JNAFarm on line market. Our final day will be October 28th. This has not been an easy decision to make but one that made itself after all the facts were gathered. I will miss you loyal patrons so much. The weekly visits, hugs and laughter cannot be replaced. I thank you so much for allowing me into your beautiful lives. I have gained so much knowledge from you, so much wisdom and wonderful recipes. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, thank you, for allowing me this gift.
I do hope you will continue to support the many farmers and artisans during this closing period. We will have the vendors share with you where you can continue to find their products once we close. Several of the vendors will be offering specials the last 2 weeks of the market so make some room in your freezers to take advantage of those opportunities.
I have spoken to Sam at Cedar Rock Dairy and to Lisa at Cherokee Market. She has volunteered to take on the milk! Many of you asked about this yesterday and I was still working on the details so here goes; many of you have standing orders with CRD, he will deliver those weekly or bi-weekly according to your schedule. If you do not want milk, text him and let him know to cancel or change your order. If you want to order milk on a variable basis, text him when you do want milk. Text him BEFORE 12:00pm on Monday’s. He will deliver to the market on Tuesday and you can pick up Wednesdays or later. The store hours are 9-7 daily. You will pay Lisa for your milk and she will pay Sam. You will leave your jars as you have done here for Bennie to pick up the following week when he delivers. Let me know if I am confusing you ;-)
I pray blessings over each of you and thank you again for all the love and support over the years.
Warmest regards,
Mary Beth Sellars

CSA Farmers Market:  Oct 1, 2015 Growing Season Update

WHERE HAVE ALL THE COLORS GONE

October already and no spectacular Michigan Fall Colors, that is because we have had no frost. Farmers and gardeners alike are very happy about that.

Even in the Upper Peninsula the trees have not changed their colors yet. Oddly since it has been a cool summer the corn and other crops grew slowly, fortunately this extra boost has provided the needed time for corn, dry beans and other crops to grow to maturity.

The sweet potatoes were dug about two weeks ago, the leeks are in the protected hoop-houses.
When the frost does arrive many crops continue to grow outside the hoop houses. Some crops like kale taste much better after a frost, the plants survival response causes it to absorb all the sugars from the root to the leaves making it so yummy.

The delayed frost is giving the pastured animals more fresh pasture than in normal years. All the farmers on the market pasture their animals, these pastured animals tend to grow slower compared to corn fed animals. For the consumer these animals provide healthier food, which is what nature intended for us to have.

This is a picture of White Pine Farm beef, which in the next month will be available for purchase on the website.

CSA Farmers Market:  Savory Sweet Potato and Leek Soup

Prep Time: 15 minutes Cook Time: 25 minutes Total Time: 40 minutes Makes: 3-4 servings
Ingredients
• 1 lb sweet potatoes
• 8 oz leeks
• 2 cups whole milk
• 1 cup chicken stock
• 1 cup water
• 3 tbsp finely minced celery leaves
• 1/4 tsp pepper
• 1/4 tsp allspice
• 1 Tbsp all purpose flour
• 2 Tbsp butter
• Half cup chopped chicken (OPTIONAL)
Preparation
1. Peel the sweet potatoes and cut them into approximately 1/2 inch cubes. Cut the green tops and stem ends from the leeks (save the green tops for flavoring stocks), quarter stalks lengthwise, and cut them into 1/2 inch pieces.
2. Heat the milk, stock, and water in a soup pot or large saucepan. Add the sweet potatoes, leeks, celery, pepper, and allspice. Bring just to a boil, reduce heat, cover, and simmer for 15 minutes or until sweet potatoes are just tender.
3. Make a rue by mixing melted butter and flour in a small sauce pan (over low heat) until pasty. Ladle in a half cup of the soup (liquid only).Stir until mixture is smooth. Add to the soup and let it cook for a minute until thickened, stirring very well.
4. Remove the pot from the heat, stir in chopped chicken and serve.
Note: If the sweet potato peels are relatively unblemished, you can make them into a garnish for your soup by cutting them into thin strips and frying them in about 1/4 inch of hot oil until lightly browned. Drain on paper towels and toss with a little salt.

Champaign, OH:  Harvest Moon

But there’s a full moon risin…’
Let’s go dancin’ in the light…
We know where the music’s playin…’
Let’s go out and feel the night…
(Harvest Moon-Neil Young)

Yes…it’s fall, you can feel a slight change in the air, the breeze, the shadows from the sun, and the leaves that are now drifting down to the ground.

We saw the Super Moon, a Harvest Moon, on Sunday evening. I sat out on my back deck, glass of wine, waiting for the cloudy sky to allow a glimpse of the moon. And finally, it happened. Magical.

Fall also brings about a shift in our produce. We said goodbye to strawberries, long ago, but you know what…we now have apples!!!! And, although we do not have a virtual market apple vendor, we do have Herr Family Farms, who bring in their goodness, when they feel they have enough!!

So…today is Apple Day at market pick up!! Even if you didn’t get to place a market order, feel free to groove to the YMCA lobby at 4:15 for bags of apples!! They will go fast so get there, quickly!!

Fall is ALL about the apple…don’t miss out!!!!

And, on a last note…Harvest. We are now in harvest season, and we want to show all of our local farmers some love. Be kind, especially on the roads. I have seen so many impatient drivers, this past week, behind farmers on the roads. Show some kindness, and remember…our local farmers feed us…

See everyone, tonight, at market pick up!!!

Peace, Love, Good Vibes…
